Chase Sapphire Preferred

If you’re looking to get into the points game for travel this is the absolute best credit card to get started.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is rated a top travel credit card among experts of points and miles travel deemed to be the apex of a journey if you’re looking to get started. This is due to several reasons including the ability to transfer points to travel partners and the 5/24 rule which we’ll explore in a bit. First, let’s look at some of the benefits.

  • 60,000 Introduction Bonus Points Offer after spending $4,000 on purchases within first 3 months from account opening
  • 5X points on travel purchased through Chase Travel
  • 3X points on dining
  • 2X points on travel

In addition, this credit card offers some travel and purchase coverage plus each account anniversary you’ll earn bonus points equal to 10% of your purchases made the previous year. That means if you spend $25,000, you’ll get 2,500 bonus points.

That’s a brief overview as it offers so much more! So what’s the catch? That pesky little 5/24 rule as previously mentioned. If you’re unfamiliar with this rule; it just means that an applicant can’t have more than 5 new credit card accounts opened in the past 24 months or risk an automatic denial. Yes, even with stellar credit. Even though some data points are out there where some were successfully able to bypass it, I wouldn’t count on it. Also, the ability to transfer to travel partners is icing on the cake. Doing so can make your 60,000 bonus points worth so much more than the standard 0.01 cent per dollar redemption rate for cash. This is why we recommend getting this card first.

Overall, when you consider the vast benefits combined with the low annual fee, this card is at the top of this list.

The Good:

  • 60,000 point introductory offer with low spend
  • Ability to transfer to travel partners
  • Category spend multipliers

The Bad:

  • 5/24 rule
  • $95 annual fee
  • You cannot receive the welcome offer (SUB) if you have earned a SUB on any Sapphire credit card (Preferred / Reserve) in the past 48 months.
  • You cannot be carrying another Sapphire credit card at time of application.
